TEN is pleased to present MY CHERRY BOMB, a solo exhibition of new work by award-winning artist sue williams at STUDIO18 in pontycymmer

MY CHERRY BOMB features williams’ latest body of large-scale paintings on canvas. akin to pages from a visual diary, published for all to see, williams’ characteristically bold + immediate paintings tell of awkward encounters, sticky situations + erotic experiences. issues of sexual communication, dysfunction + human frailty are imbedded in her work; themes which are explored + executed with such truthfulness + raw honesty

the exhibition will showcase for the first time a newly developed print folio, produced in conjunction with the print market project, cardiff. a karma sutra for the digital age, LOVE HEARTS is a folio of 20 prints in a limited edition of 10. in stark contrast to the size + vibrancy of the paintings, the prints are monochrome + intimate in scale. reminiscent of the victorian-era’s erotic miniatures, the viewer becomes a voyeur -  a position which is perhaps more familiar in today’s digitally dependent world

at the heart of williams’ practice is a universal, wholly necessary yet simple theme: that of human communication. the result is a practice which challenges taboos + provokes a response - it demands attention from the viewer. some may be dismissive, others embarrassed but such universally human themes are relatable to all - whether we admit it or not

sue williams was born in cornwall + has lived and made her career in wales over the last twenty years. williams is a senior lecturer at the university of wales trinity st davids. she is a prominent artist with a recognised body of work + an exhibition history of both solo + group shows on five continents. in 2000 she was awarded gold medal for fine art at both the national eisteddfod and the rootstein hopkins foundation award for painting.  in 2005 she was one of eight shortlisted artists for the second biannual artes mundi prize

williams’ work is raw + accomplished; strong, charged + challenging in its links to contemporary lives + the sexualisation of western society. williams continues to explore + challenge the fantasies of feminism, sexuality, gender + culture in her work, in doing so she offers her passionate + direct response to the complex world of human frailty

STUDIO18 was established by renowned painter kevin sinnott in december 2016. sinnott returned to the community of his childhood in the garw valley in 2002, and the area remains a constant inspiration + subject matter in his practice |

the print market project is a fine art print studio aiming to provide both the facilities and expertise to allow for progressive, diverse and exciting print related projects to be undertaken. the studio works with individuals and small groups in the creation and production of prints, across a range of process

with thanks to the sponsors of the artist: print market project, arts council of wales, studio18 + swansea college of art
