CERI RICHARDS [1903 - 1971]


richards was a british painter, print-maker and maker of reliefs

born in swansea, richards entered the royal college of art, london, in 1924. an accomplished musician, music, along with poetry and nature, would greatly influence his work. he is well known for his paintings, drawings + prints based on the poetry of dylan thomas and other writers such as vernon watkins

richards was appointed CBE in 1960, won the gold medal at the 1961 national eisteddfod + prizewinner at the venice biennale 1962. his work is included in many private + public collections - including the tate, glynn vivian gallery swansea, pallant house chichester and national museum cardiff



this complete set of lithographs was created to accompany the text of roberto sanesi’s book of poems 'journey toward the north'. they were drawn on plates brought to richards' home in edith grove, chelsea, on the day before he died and was richards’ last work. permission to print was given by the artist and each copy is signed in pencil lower right in the hand of mrs. frances richards. the folio was printed at the curwen studio, london + published by cerastico editore, milan, 1972
