‘Drwy fy ngwaith, dw i’n tystio. Mae’n fy nghynrychioli i, a’r lle y ces fy magu – yn Gymro Cymraeg sy’n ffeindio ei lais drwy iaith ryngwladol • I testify through my paintings. They represent myself and my birth-place - a Welsh man finding his voice through an international language’ - Elfyn Lewis
Pleser yw cyhoeddu arddangosfa undyn Elfyn Lewis – y 5ed rydym wedi ei chynnal gyda’n gilydd
Roedd amseru ei arddangosfa blaenorol yn anodd iawn – agorwyd hi ychydig ddyddiau cyn lockdown 1 yn 2020. Ond, nid yn unig rydym wedi dod drwyddi ond mae hefyd ddatblygiad pwysig yng ngwaith cyfarwydd Lewis – sef ‘dal’ llif y paent. Mae’r paent - sydd cymaint rhan o’r gelf, ac yn elfen nodedig o’r gwaith - yn awr fel petai wedi’i rewi yn y fan. Daw’r haenau hynny yn fwy amlwg fyth wrth gronni yn byllau ar ymylon yr arwynebedd, wedi’u dal gan bren wedi’i dorri a laser. Dyma rhan o broses Lewis sef yr hyn oedd yn cael ei adael ar ol ar fwrdd y stiwdio – y gorlifo hwnnw nawr yn rhan allweddol o’r gwaith ac yn teneuo ymhellach y ffin rhwng cerflun a paentiad
Anochel yn wir oedd y byddai Lewis yn llwyddo datrys y mater a datgloi drws arall yn ei yrfa artistig - a hynny tra bod y byd dan glo
Anochel • Inevitable
It’s a pleasure to announce Elfyn Lewis’s solo exhibition ‘Anochel’ – his 5th that we’ve presented together
The timing of his last show was difficult – we launched only a few days before the first lockdown of 2020. But we’ve emerged two years later with an important development in Lewis’s recognisable work – the ‘capturing’ of the flowing paint. This paint - that is so central and characteristic of his work – now pools at the edges. The layers of paint become amplified further as they collect over the edges supported by laser-cut plywood, further blurring the lines between sculpture and painting. Here we see part of Lewis’s process which was left on the studio table – that overflow has become an integral part of his paintings
It was ‘Inevitable’ indeed that Lewis resolved this matter and unlocked another avenue in his career while the world was in lockdown
