ELFYN LEWIS
Er eu bod yn haniaethol yn bennaf, mae'r gweithiau'n awgrymu cipolwg ac atgofion o dirwedd, ac maent yn llawn awyrgylch: mae cysgodion a golau, gwynt a glaw a thrydan ym mhobman. Ond mae awyrgylch mewnol, seicolegol hefyd: yn aml o fewn yr un ddelwedd mae'r hwyliau'n tywyllu, neu'n clirio. Mae emosiynau gwrthgyferbyniol yn cydfodoli; mae'r presennol yn gorchuddio ond ni all ddileu atgofion y gorffennol.

Though mostly abstract, the works hint at glimpses and memories of landscape, and they are full of atmospherics: there are shadows and light, wind and rain and electricity are everywhere. But there are internal, psychological atmospherics too: often within the same image the mood darkens, or clears. Contradictory emotions coexist; the present overlays but cannot obliterate past memories.

Born in Porthmadog, North Wales, Elfyn Lewis’s distinctive abstract paintings are held in a number of public + private collections. His work has been widely exhibited throughout the UK + worldwide. In 2009 Lewis was awarded the Gold Medal for Fine Art at the National Eisteddfod of Wales + later went on to be named Welsh artist of the year in 2010. His love of place is a clear strand throughout his work which are, as he describes, ‘layered time after time until the upper layer explodes and transforms from its volcanic creation into a vivid landscape.’

"My parents’ house sits at the mouth of the river/Afon Glaslyn, which flows from the slopes of ‘Yr Wyddfa’ (Snowdon). The house faces the sea and also looks back at the mountains. The landscape has shaped how I am. The town itself and the people have influenced me so it's only natural for me to create work that tries to convey this. Though abstract in nature, my work is an emotional response to what I feel and think about. Cardiff and Porthmadog were created or developed due to the proximity of water. The flow in and out of the tide, the changing landscape it creates, could be expressed in many ways."
