Mae TEN yn falch o gyflwyno Un Nos Ola Leuad, arddangosfa unigol o baentiadau newydd gan John Abell
Yn feiddgar ac yn llawn patrwm ailadroddus, llifeiriol, mae gwaith celf Abell wedi'u gwreiddio yn y dirwedd, ynghyd ag elfennau cryf o naratif a straeon. Mae'r corff cryno hwn o baentiadau ar raddfa fawr yn dangos ffyniant amlwg yn ei waith a phaent. Gwneuthurwr printiau oedd Abell yn nyddiau cynnar ei yrfa, ac arddangoswyd ei baentiadau cyntaf yn yr oriel 10 mlynedd yn ôl. Ers hynny, mae ei waith wedi cael eu dangos yn rhyngwladol, gydag arddangosfeydd yng Nghaeredin, Llundain ac Efrog Newydd. Mae Un Nos Ola Leuad yn nodi dychweliad i'r oriel ac i arddangos yng Nghymru
Mae llên gwerin a mytholeg yn themâu annatod wedi’u plethu drwy'r gwaith, wedi’i drwytho mewn gwylltni Gothig ac yn aml yn gwyro tuag at y ffantastig a'r apocalyptaidd. Mae ei ddiddordeb mewn llenyddiaeth, hanes gwerin a barddoniaeth ei famwlad yn mynd law yn llaw â'i brofiad byw o'r tirwedd. Nid paentiadau darluniadol gan artist ar ymweliad yw rhain, ond gwelwn wybodaeth glir ac adnabyddiaeth amlwg â thopograffeg y wlad hon, wedi pryfio o gysylltiad ysbrydol â ffurfiwyd drwy oriau o ymgolli godidog dros milltiroedd o gerdded drwy'r tir
Gwelwn rhaeadr taranllyd, ewynnog, wedi'i hollti gan goeden ‘Pwll y Wrach’, cadwyn o fynyddoedd pigfain ‘Dyffryn Ogwen’, noson serennog, ddisglair ‘Nos Olau Leuad dros Gwm Saerbren’, i gyd wedi'u haniaethu mewn marciau brwsh trwchus; eto'n adnabyddadwy - os ydych chi wedi bod, byddech chi'n gwybod. Mae haul/lleuad yn amlwg yn rhan helaeth o'r paentiadau, wedi'i osod yn uchel yn y delweddau waelod-drwm, fel pe baem yn sefyll gyda’n traed ar y ddaear, yn syllu i fyny. Mae teitl yr arddangosfa yn cyfeirio at nofel eiconig Caradog Pritchard a gyhoeddwyd ym 1961. Stori wych, gyfriniol, drist am fywyd pentref chwarela trwy lygaid bachgen ifanc yng Ngogledd Cymru, lle mae'r dirwedd yn gefndir corfforol ac emosiynnol - ar adegau, yn tywys ac yn siarad â'r prif gymeriad. Mae'n hawdd gwneud y cysylltiad rhwng ysgrifennu Pritchard a phaentiadau Abell - y ddau yn farddonol ac arallfydol, wedi'u harwain gan y tir
Mae hanes amserol yn gynhenid yn y tirwedd ac mae Abell yn manteisio ar hynny. Mae ei baentiadau'n hanesyddol ac yn ffwturistaidd ar yr un pryd, gyda'i iaith weledol drawiadol a'i fotiffau nodedig yn golchi drosom ag egni brwd. Yn ei hanfod, gwaith Cymro balch sy'n archwilio’i dir ac yn ymchwilio'i iaith yw'r celf yma, gan estyn at wybodaeth a pherchnogaeth ddyfnach o'i wlad a'i ddiwylliant. Mae'r paentiadau hyn yn wleidyddol - yn ein hatgoffa ein hunain o ddiwylliant gwerin cyfoethog ein gwlad, yn ail-gofio straeon sy'n gysylltiedig â lleoliadau penodol, yn ail-osod enwau lleoedd i flaen ein meddyliau. TEN is pleased to present Un Nos Ola Leuad, a solo exhibition of new paintings by John Abell
Bold and brimming with pattern in flowing repetition, Abell’s artworks are rooted in landscape, coupled with a strong sense of storytelling. This concise body of large-scale paintings shows a flourishing in his practice. As a printmaker in his early career, his first paintings were debuted at the gallery 10 years ago. Since then, Abell’s paintings have been shown internationally, with exhibitions in Edinburgh, London and New York. Un Nos Ola Leuad marks both a return to the gallery and to showing in Cymru
Folklore and mythology are integral themes woven through the work which is seeped in wild Gothicism, often erring towards the fantastical and apocalyptic. His interests in the literature, folk history and poetry of his homeland walk hand-in-hand with his lived experience of the landscape. This isn’t picturesque painting by a visiting artist, here we see clear knowledge and obvious familiarity with the topography of this country, born from a spiritual connection forged through hours of sublime immersion and miles of hiking through the land
The thundering, frothy, tree-split waterfall of ‘Pwll y Wrach’, the jutting mountain range of ‘Dyffryn Ogwen’, the starry, glowing night of ‘Nos Olau Leuad dros Gwm Saerbren’, all abstracted in thick brushstrokes; yet recognisable - if you’ve been, you’d know. A sun/moon is prominent in most of the paintings, placed high in the bottom-heavy imagery, as if we are stood, feet on the earth, gazing upwards. The exhibition’s title references Caradog Pritchard’s iconic novel published in 1961. A brilliant, mystical, sad tale of village life through the eyes of a young boy in North Cymru, where the landscape serves as both physical and emotional backdrop - at times, talking and guiding the main character. It’s easy to make the link between Pritchard’s fiction and Abell’s paintings - both are poetic and otherworldly, led by the land
There is innate timeless history in the landscape and Abell taps into it. His paintings are simultaneously historical and futuristic, with his arresting visual language and distinctive motifs washing over us with immersive, fervent energy. At it’s core, the art is the work of a proud Cymro who is exploring and researching his land and language, reaching for a deeper knowing and owning of his country and culture. These paintings are political acts - reminding ourselves of our country’s rich folk culture, re-remembering tales tied to locations, re-instating places names to the forefront of our minds. My work is about painting through the Welsh landscape and my relationship with it, and what I can say about the Welsh landscape painting tradition.

Cardiff-born John Abell [b.1986] studied at Camberwell College of Art, London and currently lives and works in the South Wales Valleys. Folklore and mythology are integral themes woven through John’s work, underlined by his love of Welsh culture and the landscape of Cymru. His work, across painting and printmaking, is fantastical and apocalyptic, densely packed and seeped in his interests in literature, history and poetry. John is particularly known for his large-scale monochrome wood block prints and intensely colourful gestural abstract painting. His style and method of mark-making - intuitive, geometric and meditative - translate equally to both mediums
Prints and publications are held in private and public collections worldwide including the V&A, the National Museum of Wales, the British Museum, the National Library of Australia in Canberra, the National Library of Canada in Ottawa and Columbia University Library in New York.
