Sophie Southgate’s practice is an on-going exploration of the object and the vessel, in both the contexts of sculpture and functional ceramics, and glass
-
Southgate’s work explores colour and form, and how one interacts with the other. Inspired by geometry, architecture, liminal spaces and places of transition, she translates two-dimensional shapes into complex three-dimensional forms
During her first year of post-graduate study at RCA, Southgate transitioned from a purely ceramics practice to working with cast glass, developing a new material-led methodology to explore colour and form - a natural development in her practice
Following the same paths of form creation through plaster-based processes, as well as introducing new methods of production like CNC, Southgate found an affinity with this new material discipline
Southgate’s glass practice has opened new doors into working with colour and this has become the primary focus of this series of sculptures, enhanced but not restricted by form. Colour is no longer applied to surface, it is not decorative or secondary to form, nor is it contained. Colours shift and change, travelling through form, dancing around curves and across planes before disappearing, fluctuating with light, movement and perspective
Driven by experimentation, Southgate’s work explores the endless interplay of colour and geometry. She assembles her sculptures from cast glass blocks, building segmented shapes like a 3D puzzle. There is no rigid pre-planning here; the process is entirely organic, guided by instinct and the physical nature of the glass
These coiling, rotating forms capture a unique sense of movement while maintaining a high level of technical precision

“My work crosses the boundaries of art, craft and design, taking inspiration from geometry, architecture and pop culture. I combine multiple methods of making to create highly refined objects.“ - Sophie Southgate
