SUE WILLIAMS
Mae Sue Williams yn artist rhyngwladol amlwg + artist benywaidd blaenllaw yng Nghymru, gyda chorff cydnabyddedig o waith a hanes arddangosfeydd o sioeau unigol + grŵp ar bum cyfandir. Mae ei hymarfer hunanethnograffig, boed yn lluniadu neu'n destun, yn mynegi cymhlethdodau perthnasoedd dynol mewn cyd-destun diwylliannol cyfoes - boed yn weledol neu'n destunol mae hi'n dangos bregusrwydd sydd bob amser yn ennyn ymateb effeithiol.

Sue Williams is a prominent international artist + leading female artist in Wales, with a recognised body of work and an exhibition history of both solo + group shows on five continents. Her autoethnographic practice, whether drawing or text, articulates the complexities of human relationships in a contemporary cultural context – whether visual or textual she demonstrates a vulnerability which invariably elicits an effective response.

Williams is professor of Fine Art at Swansea College of Art, University of Wales Trinity Saint David and is one of Wales’ leading contemporary female artists. In 2000 Williams was awarded the Gold Medal for Fine Art at the National Eisteddfod of Wales and the Rootstein Hopkins Foundation award for painting. In 2005 she was one of eight shortlisted artists for the second biannual Artes Mundi contemporary art prize.
Williams continues to challenge and explore new concepts and multi-disciplinary art forms, drawing the viewer into a world of provocative sexual and emotional politics. The work is raw and accomplished; strong, charged and challenging in its links to contemporary lives and the sexualisation of western society. Williams continues to explore and challenge the fantasies of feminism, sexuality, gender and culture in her work, in doing so she offers her passionate and direct response to the complex world of human frailty.

I explore the rich and complex frictions created between social media and real life. The overload of visuals and noises blur the boundaries, and reality and fantasy are playfully entangled, exploring misrepresentation and misinterpretation.
“I probe into sexual and cerebral relationships, the dysfunctional, gender communication and our dependency on social media where all aspects of human emotion, well-being, life, death, ego, and vulnerability lie, confronting the rich core of human behaviour and in turn exposing the darkness and the humour. I draw the viewer into a world of provocative sexual and emotional politics, unravelling the questions raised about the construction of identity in contemporary culture and the impact on our bodies and minds.”
